چکیده

Nishimizu and Hulten (1978) developed a model for measuring productivity growth when intermediate inputs are explicitly recognized. they show "...that the aggregate rate of productivity change is the weighted sum of the sectoral rates" (p. 353). To derive this result, the authors assume that the inputs are "...allocated efficiently among sectors" (p. 352). The weights used to sum the sectoral rates relies on prices, and thus it is implicitly assumed that the technology operates in an allocatively efficient manner, to use the terminology of Farrell (1957). The purpose of this paper is to introduce a frontier model for productivity measurement that does not require that inputs are efficiently allocated among sectors or that prices are available. In particular we develop a network activity analysis model that explicitly recognizes that some inputs are produced and consumed within the production technology. Here we differ from Koopmans (1951) by assuming that the intermediate inputs may also be final output. This assumption is in line with current international trade theory, where intermediate inputs are tradable. Our model consists of two production units that are interconnected in a network to form a production technology. The first node or production unit produces outputs, some of which are used as in puts in the second unit. These intermediate inputs may also be final

Malmquist Productivity Index Using Two-stage DEA Model in Heart Hospitals

Abstract Heart patients displays several symptoms and it is hard to point them. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) provides a comparative efficiency degree for each decision-making units (DMUs) with several inputs and outputs. Evaluating of hospitals is one of the major applications in DEA. In this study, a comparison of additive model with standard input oriented and output oriented M...

The overall efficiency and projection point in network DEA

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is one of the best methods for measuring the efficiency and productivity of Decision Making Units (DMU). Evaluating the efficiency of DMUs which have two or several stages by using the conventional DEA models, is equal to consider them as black box. This method, omits the effect of intermediate measure on efficiency. Therefore, just the first network inputs and t...

Quality Indicators and Intermediate Products: A Non-Parametric Approach

In this paper we propose a methodology to measure the characteristics and composition of intermediate products using productivity indicators based on directional distance functions. We evaluate how quality attributes interact with the quantity level in grapes production, and find evidence of a trade-off between quantity and aggregate quality for Chardonnay. ∗Dipartimento di Scienze Economiche —...

Import Penetration, Intermediate Inputs and Firms’ Productivity in the EU Food Industry

The aim of this contribution is to study empirically the effect of trade liberalization on productivity growth exploiting a large micro-dataset of more than 20,000 French and Italian food firms, over the 2004-2012 period. This relationship has been studied focusing on import penetration at both industry and upstream sectors level, to investigate the role played by imports in intermediate inputs...
